Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge for maintaining product quality in the spirits industry.

This standard is relevant to you if your role requires you to check product and materials against the required quality standards, such as raw materials analysis, process quality checks, finished product inspection, nosing and cask assessment. 


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. maintain product quality in accordance with relevant organisational health and safety requirements, quality standards, environmental standards and Revenue and Customs requirements
  2. follow the organisational methods and procedures for checking product quality
  3. compare the results of quality checks against required organisational standards
  4. record the results of quality checks according to organisational specification
  5. take actions within the limits of your own authority to bring the product back into specification or escalate to the appropriate person
  6. communicate the results of quality checks and any actions taken to the relevant colleagues within organisational timescales
  7. complete all records in accordance with organisational procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to maintain product quality in accordance with the current legislation, organisational health and safety, hygiene, environmental, quality standards and instructions, Revenue and Customs requirements
  2. the consequences of not meeting the relevant regulatory requirements
  3. how to carry out the specific quality checks required by your organisation
  4. what to do if quality checks show that there is a nonconformance with the required standard
  5. how to interpret the information on the displays of specified equipment
  6. how to complete records in accordance with organisational requirements
  7. what should be communicated, to whom and why it should be done
  8. the limits of your authority and the consequences of exceeding them
