Overview
This standard covers the skills and knowledge needed to work safely and to ensure the safety of colleagues and visitors to the business.
It covers the organisational requirements for health and safety and involves:
- Lifting and handling safely
- Using tools and work equipment safely
- Maintaining a healthy and safe working environment
- Responding to emergencies
You must have an awareness of the health and safety requirements of your business, understand the risks associated with working in the spirits industry and have an understanding of relevant health and safety legislation.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work safely in accordance with relevant organisational health and safety requirements, quality standards, environmental standards and Revenue and Customs requirements
- take precautions to protect self, colleagues and visitors in accordance with organisational requirements
- follow organisational instructions on safety notices and hazard warning signs
- keep access and emergency escape routes clear of hazards
- keep your work area clean and free from hazards
- use personal protective equipment in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer's instructions
- use lifting and handling techniques in accordance with organisational requirements
- check tools and equipment are fit for use and, if not, report in accordance with organisational requirements
- use tools and equipment in accordance with organisational requirements
- return tools and equipment after use to their storage location
- maintain tools and equipment within the limits of your authority
- follow your organisation's standard operating procedures on discovery, or being alerted to, an emergency
- communicate in accordance with organisational requirements
- complete all records in accordance with organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to work safely in accordance with the current legislation and the organisational health and safety, hygiene, environmental, quality standards and instructions, Revenue and Customs requirements
- why it is important to take necessary precautions to protect self, colleagues and visitors to the business and what may happen if this is not done
- the main risks and hazards in the workplace and steps taken to control them
- the safety precautions required in the workplace
- the reasons for taking safety precautions and the consequences of not doing so
- the safe working practices in your workplace and why it is important to follow them
- how to contact and obtain help from colleagues with first aid qualifications
- the correct manual handling techniques and what may happen if they are not followed
- why it is important to wear the correct personal protective equipment and what may happen if this is not done
- how to establish tools and equipment are fit for use and how to use them correctly
- the hazards associated with the tools and equipment in use
- the safe working limits for tools and equipment in use and what may happen if these are not adhered to
- the location of fire exits, assembly points, fire alarm points and fire fighting equipment
- the procedures for different types of emergencies and why they should be followed
- how to follow emergency stop procedures and what may happen if they are not followed
- how to complete records in accordance with organisational requirements
- what should be communicated with regard to working safely, to whom and why it should be done
- the limits of your authority and the consequences of exceeding them
