Overview

This standard is about carrying out pre- and post-work inspections of heavy vehicle trailers using a variety of basic inspection methods and defect recording.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 use suitable personal protective equipment throughout all inspection activities 
P2 use suitable sources of technical information to support your inspection activities 
P3 carry out systematic heavy vehicle trailer inspections following: 

P3.1 your workplace procedures 
P3.2 health, safety and environmental requirements 
P3.3 the manufacturer's instructions (if appropriate) 
P4 use relevant test methods to check the basic operation of heavy vehicle trailer systems and heavy vehicle trailer condition 
P5 ensure your comparison of the heavy vehicle trailer against specification accurately identifies any: 
P5.1 differences from the heavy vehicle trailer specification 
P5.2 heavy vehicle trailer appearance and condition faults 
P6 work in a way which minimises the risk of damage to the heavy vehicle trailer and its systems, other people and their property 
P7 make suitable recommendations for future action based upon the results of your *inspections *
P8 ensure your records are accurate, complete and promptly passed to the relevant person(s)  in the format required 
P9 complete all inspection activities within the agreed timescale and to specification 
P10 promptly report any anticipated delays in completion to the relevant person(s) 


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

Legislative and organisational requirements and procedures
K1 the health and safety legislation and workplace procedures relevant to conducting pre- and post-work vehicle inspections and personal and vehicle protection 
K2 your workplace procedures for 

K2.1 recording pre and post work inspections and any variations from specifications 
K2.2 the referral of problems 
K2.3 reporting delays to the completion of work  
K3 the importance of making accurate records of the results of your inspections and interpreting them correctly 
K4 the importance of working to agreed timescales and keeping others informed of progress 
K5 the relationship between time and costs 
K6 the importance of promptly reporting anticipated delays to the relevant person(s)
