Overview

​This standard is about conducting routine examination, adjustment and replacement activities as part of the periodic servicing of heavy vehicle trailers.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 use suitable personal and vehicle protective equipment throughout all heavy vehicle trailer maintenance activities 
P2 use suitable sources of technical and legal information to support all your maintenance activities 
P3 use the correct specifications and tolerances for the heavy vehicle trailer when making assessments of system and component performance 
P4 where the customer's trailer falls outside the manufacturer's original specification, record details accurately and use this adapted specification as the basis for your examination and assessment *
P5 examine the heavy vehicle trailer systems and *components following: 

P5.1 manufacturer's approved examination methods
P5.2 your workplace procedures 
P5.3 health, safety and environmental requirements 
P6 ensure your examination methods identify accurately any heavy vehicle trailer system and component problems falling outside the servicing schedule specified 
P7 carry out adjustments, replacement of heavy vehicle trailer components and replenishment of consumable materials following the manufacturer's current specification for: 

P7.1 the particular service interval 
P7.2 working methods and procedures 
P7.3 use of equipment 
P7.4 the tolerances for the vehicle 
P8 where system adjustments cannot be made within the manufacturer's specification, record the details accurately and take action which complies with the customer's instructions  
P9 work in a way which minimises the risk of damage to the trailer and its systems 
P10 use suitable testing methods to evaluate the performance of all replaced and adjusted components and systems accurately, prior to returning the heavy vehicle trailer to the customer 
P11 promptly report any problems or issues relating to the heavy vehicle trailer's condition or conformity to the relevant person(s)
P12 ensure your maintenance records are accurate, complete and promptly passed to the relevant person(s)  in the format required 
P13 complete all heavy vehicle trailer maintenance activities within the agreed timescale 

P14 promptly report any anticipated delays in completion to the relevant persons(s)   


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

Legislative and organisational requirements and procedures
K1 the manufacturer's and legal requirements (including O-License criteria) relating to routine maintenance activities for heavy vehicle trailer systems and *components *
K2 the legal requirements relating to the heavy vehicle trailer maintenance and auxiliary equipment (including road safety requirements) 
K3 the health and safety legislation and workplace procedures relevant to heavy vehicle trailer maintenance activities and personal and trailer protection 
K4 your workplace procedures for: 

K4.1 recording heavy vehicle trailer maintenance work and any variations from the original specification 
K4.2 the referral of problems 
K4.3 reporting delays to the completion of work 
K5 the importance of documenting heavy vehicle trailer maintenance information 
K6 the importance of working to agreed timescales and keeping others informed of progress

Routine maintenance requirements
