Overview
This standard covers the skills and knowledge needed to prepare and operate equipment /machinery/tools in the fabrication of glass supporting systems. The equipment is used to undertake work activities, and you are expected to be able to prepare it for operation. You have to monitor the equipment during operation and identify any indications of a malfunction or poor performance. In addition, you have to ensure the equipment is clean and clear from obstructions, although you will not undertake routine or emergency maintenance of the kind carried out by maintenance engineers.
This unit applies to operatives who fabricate windows, doors, conservatories and curtain walling.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- comply with health and safety requirements and procedures at all times
- identify and confirm specifications for the work being undertaken
- select equipment that is suitable and confirm it is available and safe for use
- prepare the equipment following standard operating procedures
- start up and shut down the equipment following standard operating procedures
- operate equipment/machinery/tools following standard operating procedures and manufacturers' instructions
- check monitoring and control systems are fully functional following standard operating procedures
- remove any items liable to damage the equipment/machinery/tools following standard operating procedures
- clear equipment/machinery/tools of debris, dirt, and other materials that affect its ability to operate following standard operating procedures
- identify any problems relating to the equipment/machinery/tools and deal with them following standard operating procedures
- record information on the operation of the equipment in appropriate information systems

- relevant health and safety procedures that need to be followed
- how to confirm the correct specifications for the work being undertaken
