Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge needed to monitor the fabrication process; it includes the need to ensure work is completed to meet the job specifications in accordance with safe working practices. There is also the requirement to ensure those working on the tasks have the necessary skills, knowledge and experience required. Knowledge of problem solving and how to resolve and record issues related to the production processes.

This unit applies to operatives who fabricate windows, doors, conservatories and curtain walling.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. obtain and confirm relevant documentation to meet specifications
  2. check operators have the necessary skills/qualifications/licences following standard operating procedures
  3. monitor operations and discuss observations to meet organisation requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to obtain schedules and specifications for glass or glass related operations
  2. how to confirm job specifications
  3. what to look for when examining materials
  4. how to check if the operators have the necessary skills/qualification/licences to carry out work required
  5. problems that can arise and how these might be overcome
  6. how to monitor operations
  7. how to identify problems with equipment or materials and provide solutions
  8. how to inform operators of the safe use of equipment
  9. how to identify any incorrect working practices and provide clear advice or guidance
  10. how to identify good practice
  11. how to identify potential improvements
  12. how to make recommendations to adopt good working practice or improve working practice
  13. why it is important to record problems, solutions, good working practice, recommendations for improvement
  14. how to record problems, solutions, good working practice, and recommendations for improvements
