Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge needed to carry out cavity wall clearance surveys to provide accurate assessments of the cavity and building condition and provide clear and accurate information on surveys. All work must be completed following safe working practices, relevant legislation, and comply with contract information and the allocated timescales.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify locations for surveys to be carried out following standard operating procedures
  2. identify construction type of properties following standard operating procedures
  3. conduct internal and external visual checks on properties following standard operating procedures
  4. set up equipment required to conduct surveys
  5. conduct scoping to identify issues, defects and materials present
  6. check work will not adversely effect ventilation, flue and vents during extractions
  7. identify if extractions are required following standard operating procedures
  8. record findings following standard operating procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. relevant building regulations
  2. key aspects to consider on different types of building construction
  3. building types checked for presence of asbestos
  4. how checks to determine asbestos containing materials are present are carried out and who by
  5. visual checks required
  6. equipment used
  7. what to do if asbestos is present or suspected
  8. how to assess internal and external pre-existing damage
  9. aspects of structures assessed for suitability
  10. scoping required to identify issues and defects present
  11. factors that affect the safe operation of combustion ventilation, appliance cooling ventilation and flue systems
  12. how to confirm proposed extractions meets specifications
  13. how to assess site layouts
  14. how to identify the materials in cavities
  15. how weather conditions affect choice of insulation
  16. how to determine if extractions are required
  17. information on findings to record
