This standard is about the removal of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic plant and apparatus in an electricity power utilities environment.

This standard is suitable for a crafts person or technician working in the installation, commissioning and maintenance of wind turbine components in the power utilities environment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow and maintain safe working and environment practices in accordance with your organisation’s requirements throughout the duration of the work
  2. use your organisation’s documentation and work instructions to determine the work location
  3. conduct a site-specific risk assessment in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  4. develop a work plan that includes tasks and sequencing of tasks needed to complete the work activity
  5. provide the work plan to parties directly and indirectly responsible for completing the work activity
  6. inspect, prepare and carry out pre use checks on tools and equipment required to complete work activity in accordance with work instructions and equipment specifications
  7. select and wear required personal protective equipment when completing work activities in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  8. apply and adhere to control measures in accordance with the requirements of the Safe System of Work (SSOW)
  9. locate the plant and equipment and establish what needs to be removed in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  10. make sure stored energy is released prior to commencing work to remove plant and apparatus, in alignment with work instructions, specifically by applying safe isolation, prove dead, and de-energizing any hydraulic systems at the point of work
  11. take precautions to prevent damage to plant and apparatus before and during their removal
  12. remove plant and apparatus in accordance with equipment specification and work instructions
  13. label and store the removed components in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  14. store tools and equipment on completion of the work activity in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  15. dispose of waste materials and hazardous substances in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  16. leave the work area in a condition that is in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  17. report on unavailable or defective tools, equipment and resources in accordance with your organisation’s reporting procedures
  18. maintain documentation and report the completion of work activities in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  19. deal with any problems within the limits of your job role responsibility
  20. report any problems outside your job role responsibility to designated personnel

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. your responsibilities under current environmental, health and safety legislation and your organisation’s procedures in relation to the work to be carried out
  2. your organisation’s reporting lines and authorisation roles and responsibilities
  3. your organisation’s policies and procedures that directly impact on the work to be undertaken
  4. your organisation’s procedures and processes for reporting problems with tools and equipment
  5. processes and procedures to be followed for inspecting and preparing tools and equipment prior to use
  6. what personal protective equipment needs to be worn when undertaking work activities
  7. what materials and substances are dangerous and hazardous to health
  8. how to maintain safe working and environmental practices throughout the duration of the work
  9. how to minimise risks to self and others when undertaking work activities
  10. your organisation’s work instructions, information and reporting systems and documentation
  11. your organisation’s requirements for responding to the different types and categories of emergency situations that might occur
  12. the procedures for removing plant and apparatus using specified methods, processes and procedures
  13. what handling techniques and equipment should be used, in compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), when removing plant and apparatus
  14. the procedures for identifying and reporting inaccurate and incorrect work instructions and documentation
  15. the safety techniques specific to electricity power utilities, including safe isolation procedures, prove dead, de-energising of hydraulic systems and confined space entry protocols, as required by your organisation
