Overview

The Standard is about assembling pipes and fittings for water network construction.  Assembly methods and techniques will include cutting, electrofusion welding, drilling and tapping, and mechanical jointing on metallic or polyethylene (PE) materials. 
This involves producing assemblies using bolt, screwed, compression and flanged joints to industry standards and specifications in line with work instructions.
This Standard is for water network construction operatives who assemble pipes and fittings.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. assemble pipes and fittings in line with health, safety and environmental regulations and guidelines 2. assemble pipes and fittings in line with instructions, assembly drawings and any other relevant specifications 3. make sure specified pipes and fittings are available and in a usable condition 4. use appropriate methods and techniques to assemble pipes and fittings in their designated positions 5. secure pipes and fittings using specified connectors and securing devices 6. check that finished assembly meets specification 7. deal with problems within your control without delay 8. report problems you cannot solve to relevant people

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. relevant health, safety and environment legislation and environmental procedures, codes of practice and relevant company procedures including manual handling and use of equipment

  2. relevant information about quality standards and accuracy to be achieved from industry standards, manufacturers’ instructions and specifications, company procedures, codes of practice

  3. how to interpret drawings and related specifications 

  4. type and complexity of assembly to be produced including bolt, compression, flanged

  5. assembly methods and techniques to be used on metallic and polyethylene (PE) including cutting, electrofusion welding, drilling and tapping, mechanical jointing

  6. the need for quality control procedures

  7. relevant types of handling equipment and procedures 

  8. preparation techniques for simple joints

  9. the tools and equipment required for assembly and the importance of looking after them

  10. what to do in the event of a problem occurring and how to and who to report it to
