Overview

This Standard is about educating and increasing stakeholders knowledge of water fittings compliance requirements. Stakeholders could be installers, designers, manufacturers and colleagues. Education could take place with individuals or groups. It could be delivered remotely or face to face such as at agricultural shows, during college courses or structured CPD activities or during team or in-company meetings.

It involves identifying education opportunities, planning appropriate education content, delivering information at an appropriate level and pace, checking understanding and promoting opportunities for clarification and follow-up.

This Standard is for water fittings compliance team members.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify stakeholders internally and externally who can influence water fittings compliance practice, in line with departmental strategy
  2. identify and secure appropriate opportunities to educate selected stakeholders, in line with departmental strategy
  3. develop learning objectives that meet information requirements of stakeholders
  4. plan education content that is of the breadth and level of technical detail required by stakeholders
  5. deliver information about water fittings requirements in a clear and structured way and at a level and pace that is appropriate for the audience
  6. make sure content about the purpose, stages of compliance and consent, requirements of water fittings legislation and the implications of non-compliance is current and accurate
  7. escalate matters for additional technical advice in line with organisational procedures
  8. communicate the benefits of using approved contractors at appropriate times
  9. check stakeholders understand the information given and their role in compliance activity at appropriate times
  10. promote opportunities for follow up or subsequent clarification for stakeholders
  11. identify and promote understanding of new technologies and their impact on compliance to legislation with relevant stakeholders
  12. use social media and other appropriate methods to promote trusted online resources to educate and update stakeholders at appropriate times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. relevant legislation appropriate to England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland covering the design, installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, water fittings and water-using appliances
  2. regulator specifications, appropriate British standards and approved installation methods including Type BA devices (reduced pressure zone valves) and what is required to be notified by customer prior to installation
  3. relevant regulatory, organisational, operational and emergency processes and procedures relating to health, safety and the environment
  4. how to determine water regulation implications from a water system, product or component design
  5. what constitutes contravention of legislation for different plumbing systems
  6. the implications of non-compliance on public health including slight, significant and serious health hazard, financial impact practicalities, logistics
  7. different types of risk posed by different contraventions, the actions and penalties which can be applied and emerging trends in compliance activity
  8. the impact that education of installers, designers, manufacturers and colleagues can have on influencing good practice and compliance
  9. how to interpret organisational educational strategy about compliance requirements
  10. the range of available opportunities for education and the information giving techniques appropriate for each
  11. methods to identify current knowledge of stakeholders
  12. how to structure information and communicate with installers, designers and colleagues as individuals and in groups, face to face and remotely
  13. techniques for confirming understanding and the importance of making sure that stakeholders understand the information given
  14. the resources available for stakeholders to gain future information and updates in individual and group situations
  15. organisational procedures relating to escalation for additional technical advice
  16. sources of information on new technologies and how to assess their impact on compliance with legislation
  17. the requirements under current legislation for prior notification and how to promote the benefits to
    customers and stakeholders
  18. approved methods of using social media to educate and update stakeholders on organisational policies and strategies
  19. trusted resources available online for stakeholders to help understanding and compliance with the legislation and how to promote them
  20. techniques for promoting the use of approved contractors
