Restore sewerage networks to an appropriate condition
Overview
This Standard is about restoring the function of the sewerage network either on a planned basis or in response to notification of a malfunction of the system. It includes identifying the work to be carried out, carrying out the maintenance with the right method and tools and verifying and testing the restored sewerage network. Maintenance activities could include activities such as making repairs or water-jetting. This Standard is aimed at anyone who works in sewerage maintenance.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
"1. identify the position of sewerage networks requiring remedial
action in accordance with approved procedures and practices
2. select an appropriate water supply in accordance with approved
procedures and practices
3. establish remedial action requirements in accordance with
relevant technical procedures
4. select information, plant, tools and equipment that are appropriate
for remedial action
5. notify individuals and organisations affected by remedial action in
accordance with relevant company procedures
6. report problems outside the scope of the job holder in accordance
with relevant company procedures
7. identify and report external factors which prevent the job being
carried out when required to appropriate people
8. identify the risks associated with confined spaces, and the
associated control measures
9. prepare tools and equipment in accordance with approved
procedures and practices, reporting any defects and deficiencies
to appropriate people
10. carry out work activities in accordance with approved procedures
and practices at all times
11. dispose of waste materials in accordance with approved
procedures and practices
12. verify and test maintained sewerage network in accordance with
approved procedures and practices
13. record and report work activities and outcomes in accordance with
relevant company procedures
14. identify faults and damage outside the scope of your job
15. report faults and damage in accordance with relevant company
procedures
16. recommend possible temporary arrangements to protect the
operation and condition of sewers and ancillaries, properties and
the environment in accordance with approved procedures and
practices
17. ensure records of faults and damage are accurate and legible,
and are reported in accordance with relevant company
procedures
18. ensure work activities conform with approved procedures and
practices at all times"

maintenance including those relating to health, safety and the

2. the risks associated with confined spaces and the associated
procedures
3. sources of information relevant to the activity and how to interpret
it

6. materials, tools and equipment requirements for remedial action
7. the most suitable choice of materials and equipment given the
nature of the work activity, and its potential impact on the
environment
8. alternative methods of remedial action including rodding, water
jetting, cleaning and disinfecting and when it is appropriate to use
them
9. the likely impact of work activities on others
10. potential hazards associated with sewage including trade
effluents, uncontrolled discharges into the system, and other
hazardous objects
11. dangers from vermin and the associated control measures
12. the risks associated with confined spaces and the associated
control measures
13. external factors that may affect the work including weather, traffic,
access, safety, working environment, environmental issues
14. methods of verifying and testing maintained sewerage networks
including visual inspection and performance testing
15. types of sewers, drains and ancillaries including un-powered and
electrically isolated ancillaries
16. alternative methods for remedial action
17. the risks associated with manual handling and the appropriate
control measures
18. reporting procedures for defects to tools and equipment
19. implications of inadequate remedial action
20. problems that may be encountered during remedial action and
ways in which they can be mitigated
21. responsibilities for health and safety
22. procedures for disposal of waste materials including for silt, roots
and sewer debris
23. the types of sewerage systems and flow variations
24. faults and damage including major structural damage, serious
blockage, flooding, danger to public health, pollution and how to
identify them
