Overview

This Standard is about carrying out inspections and operational maintenance on sewerage networks. Operational maintenance is taken to mean straightforward activities such as cleaning and lubrication on un-powered and electrically isolated parts of sewerage networks. It includes carrying out inspections, selecting and preparing tools and equipment, carrying out maintenance and dealing with any faults or damage. This Standard is for anyone who inspects and carries out operational maintenance of sewerage networks.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. locate position of sewerage network requiring inspection,

    rectification or repair in accordance with approved procedures and

    practices

    1. select an appropriate water supply in accordance with approved

    procedures and practices

    1. establish inspection and maintenance requirements of sewerage

    network in accordance with approved procedures and practices

    1. identify and report external factors which prevent the job being

    carried out when required to appropriate people

    1. prepare appropriate materials, tools and equipment for work

    activities in accordance with approved procedures and practices

    1. notify individuals and organisations affected by work activities in

    accordance with relevant company procedures

    1. identify the risks associated with confined spaces, and the

    associated control measures

    1. carry out inspection and operational maintenance of sewerage

    network in accordance with approved procedures, practices and

    relevant technical specification

    1. identify and report defects, deficiencies, faults or damage outside

    the scope of your job in accordance with relevant company

    procedures

    1. recommend possible temporary arrangements to protect the

    operation and condition of sewerage network, in accordance and

    approved procedures and practices

    1. record and report work activities, outcomes, faults and damage in

    accordance with relevant company procedures

    1. ensure records are accurate and legible and are disseminated in

    accordance with relevant company procedures

    1. ensure work activities comply with approved procedures and

    practices at all times


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. regulatory and company procedures relevant to sewerage

    maintenance including those relating to health, safety and the

    environment

    1. the risks associated with confined spaces and the associated

    procedures and control measures

    1. types of sewers, drains and ancillaries including un-powered and

    electrically isolated ancillaries

    1. identification of the condition of sewers and ancillaries

    2. the correct procedures for obtaining and using a water supply

    3. maintenance requirements of sewers and ancillaries

    4. maintenance methods including operational checks, lubrication,

    cleaning

    1. inspection methods including visual inspection, performance tests

    2. external factors that may affect the work including weather, traffic,

    access, safety, working environment, environmental issues

    1. preparation procedures for inspection and operational

    maintenance

    1. the correct procedures for the use of tools and equipment

    2. the risks associated with manual handling and the appropriate

    control measures

    1. implications of inadequate inspection and operational

    maintenance for the operation of the system

    1. interpretation of results from verification and testing

    2. tools and equipment including cutting equipment, hand tools,

    inspection equipment, cleaning equipment and when it is

    appropriate to use them

    1. technical specifications for: tools and equipment; operational

    maintenance procedures; verification and testing

    1. faults and damage including major structural damage, serious

    blockage, flooding, danger to public health, pollution and how to

    identify them recording and reporting procedures

    1. implications of not correctly recording and reporting faults and

    damage

    1. types of temporary arrangements including flow diversion,

    temporary pumping, isolation to protect work areas and methods

    of procurement

    1. effects of influents on sewer condition

    2. implications of flooding and pollution
