Overview
This standard covers fault finding on smart meters in the energy supply and use sector. This work must be in accordance with the current versions of the appropriate industry standards and regulations industry recognised working practices; the working environment and the natural environment.
To meet this standard you will be able to:
- prepare the work area and confirm it is in a safe condition to carry out the work
- confirm you have the appropriate job specifications and instructions
- use tools, equipment, materials and other resources required for the job to be undertaken
- communicate with all customers and members of the public
You will be expected to work with minimal supervision, taking personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work the work carried out.
This standard is suitable for a crafts person or technician working in the energy supply and use sector carrying out fault finding.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
Plan to carry out fault finding1. identify the area to be worked on using available information and organisational documentation2. carry out a site specific risk assessment of the work, identifying hazards and the required control measures3. survey the work site pre-fault finding for any key structural features, damage or defects that could affect the operation, recording them4. select, inspect and wear relevant personal protective equipment for completing work activities in line with organisational procedures5. protect the work site and the building fabric against possible damage being caused during the process6. check and confirm all materials, tools and equipment necessary for the activities are available and are fit for purpose7. communicate with the property occupier and other people who will be affected by the work throughout the process
Prepare to carry out fault finding8. identify the activities that make up the maintenance schedule for the system or component9. carry out service and maintenance activities using procedures, which comply with industry requirements10. service and maintain system components to ensure continued effective operation of the system
Diagnose the cause and rectify faults11. locate faults in smart meter or components using procedures that comply with industry requirements 11.1 identify performance deficiencies in meter operation 11.2 use diagnostic techniques to locate meter faults 11.3 use manufacturer's procedures to locate meter faults12 liaise with relevant persons to agree fault rectification procedures, which will minimise disruption to work routines13 rectify and repair faults in meter to restore it or relevant components to function to performance specification14 take precautionary actions to prevent the unauthorised use of unsafe systems or components15 make appliance and system "safe" if repair cannot be made, where appropriate
Restore and reinstate the work area16 report information on the work to the relevant persons17 check that the customer is satisfied with the finished job18 record and complete all documentation in line with industry standards19 deal with problems safely and efficiently, referring matters which cannot be rectified to the appropriate person20 store tools and equipment safely and securely, leaving the work area in a safe condition in accordance with organisational procedures
