Overview

This Standard defines the competence required to load waste safely, and observe operational and regulatory requirements. You will be able to assess the suitability of the location and any equipment to be used in loading the vehicle, and report any situations where these do not meet requirements. This Standard is for anyone who has to load a waste transport vehicle as part of their job role.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

Prepare to load waste and related material

  1. establish the type of waste to be loaded

  2. establish the accessibility and the suitability of the loading location

  3. confirm the suitability of the loading equipment to be used

  4. confirm the vehicle is positioned so it can be prepared and loaded

    safely

  5. comply with all regulations and operational procedures that relate

    to loading waste

  6. select and use appropriate PPE in accordance with operational

    requirements

  7. work within the safe loading limits of both the vehicle and loading

    equipment

  8. work in a way which complies with all regulations, and operational

    and location-specific procedures that relate to loading waste

    Load waste and related materials in line with locationspecific procedures

  9. distribute the load to prevent movement, displacement or escape

    of waste during transit

  10. check and confirm the load is secure and safe before the loaded

    vehicle is moved, and that the vehicle and load comply with

    regulations

    Use and communicate data and information connected with

    loading waste and related materials

  11. communicate with others involved in the loading processes to

    ensure work is carried out safely, and in compliance with

    operational and location-specific procedures

  12. check that the waste and the documentation are in compliance

  13. report vehicle defects or problems with defective equipment to the

    designated person

  14. check that documentation is legible and clear and seek

    confirmation from a person in authority if there are any doubts or

    discrepancies

  15. complete documentation in accordance with operational and

    location-specific procedures

  16. report situations that prevent safe loading or unloading to take

    place in accordance with operational and location-specific

    procedures

    Resolve problems which arise from loading waste and

    related materials

  17. resolve any discrepancies in the documentation for the load

    before the waste is loaded

  18. report defects in operational suitability of the vehicle and

    loading equipment to the designated person

  19. arrange for alternative loading sites to be identified when the

    designated site is unsuitable

  20. reload or rearrange the load if the loading operation causes

    instability of the vehicle or loading equipment

  2. how to identify work-related hazards and risks

  3. details of operational procedures and documentation

  4. how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) in line with

    operationalprocedures

  5. operational procedures and the importance of complying with

    them

    Loading waste and related materials

  6. the operational procedures relating to loading waste and related

    materials

  7. the operational procedures relating to the carriage of dangerous

    goods

  8. site operating procedures and regulations at loading sites

  9. safe loading limits of both the vehicle and loadiong equipment

  10. the different types of waste and materials likely to be encountered

    whilst carrying out the job

  11. how to establish compliance of load with transfer requirements

  12. how to operate loading equipment which is both integral and nonintegral with the vehicle

  13. how to identify, rectify and record discrepancies and defects

  14. the nature and characteristics of waste loads and related

    materials

  15. the limits of job role and responsibility
