Overview

This standard covers contributing to technical leadership in the power utilities environment. 

To meet this standard you will be able to:

  • communicate with colleagues
  • evaluate work plans
  • ensure safe working practices are carried out
This standard is suitable for a team leader working in the power industry with with a level of autonomy, taking personal responsibility for their own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work carried out


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. evaluate work plans, work methods and procedures for technical feasibility **
  2. carry out  a site specific risk assessment of the work, identifying hazards and the required control measures
  3. deal with problems safely and efficiently, referring matters which cannot be rectified to the appropriate person, where required
  4. report on the actions taken to resolve potential problems in accordance with organisational reporting systems and procedures
  5. confirm that the solutions to overcome problems are implemented in a safe and effective way
  6. provide colleagues with up-to-date technical information, advice and guidance on the status and potential changes to working methods
  7. communicate methods to be adopted and implement to overcome and resolve the potential problem to designated and authorised personnel **


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the principles of health and safety in the workplace, environmental legislation and relevant regulations in relation to the work to be carried out

  2. the organisations reporting lines, authorisation roles and responsibilities

  3. the organisational safety rules, policies and procedures in relation to the work to be carried out

  4. how to read and interpret the, procedures and information sources used to make sure that tools and equipment are fit for purpose and safe to use
  5. how to carry out a site risk assessment, identify hazards and assess risks of the site and proposed activity
  6. how to maintain safe working and environmental practices throughout the duration of the work
  7. how to respond to the different types and categories of emergency situations that might occur
  8. how to devise deliverable work plans that reflect the skills and competencies of the individual and the work team
  9. the relevant planning methods and tools
  10. the relevant problem solving tools and techniques
  11. how and the importance of dealing with problems safely and efficiently, referring matters which cannot be rectified to the appropriate person, where required
  12. how to report on the actions taken to resolve potential problems in accordance with organisational reporting systems and procedures
  13. the importance of confirming that the solutions to overcome problems are implemented in a safe and effective way
  14. the importance of providing colleagues with up-to-date technical information, advice and guidance on the status and potential changes to working methods
