Overview

This standard covers removing plant and apparatus in the power utilities environment. This includes preparing and undertaking the work in accordance with the current organisational procedures. 

To meet this standard you will be able to:

  • follow the processes and procedures to complete work in line with the organisational quality assurance and operating specifications
  • work safely using appropriate tools and equipment
  • remove plant and apparatus in line with operational requirements

You will demonstrate a safety conscious approach to the control of hazards associated with the activity whilst working and communicating effectively with other team members to achieve tasks.

This standard is suitable for a crafts person or technician working independently in the power utilities environment, taking personal responsibility for their own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work carried out.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

Plan to remove plant and apparatus
1. identify the plant and apparatus to be worked on using available information
2. carry out  a site specific risk assessment of the work, identifying hazards and the required control measures
3.  identify the tasks and their sequence needed to remove plant and apparatus in the utilities environment
4. inform parties directly and indirectly responsible for completing the work activity of the work plan

Prepare to remove plant and apparatus
5. carry out a pre-use inspection of the tools and equipment to be used, checking condition and service information in accordance with organisational procedures
6. plan and carry out all work in line with organisational policy and work procedures
7. select, inspect and wear relevant personal protective equipment for completing work activities in line with organisational procedures 
8. apply the control measures necessary to meet safety requirements for the work activity
9. locate and establish the plant and equipment to be removed in accordance with authorisation procedures

Remove plant and apparatus
10. confirm that stored energy is released before work to remove plant and apparatus commences in accordance work instructions 
11. take precautions to prevent damage to plant and apparatus before and during their removal 
12. remove plant and apparatus in accordance with equipment specification and work instructions
13. work safely at all times, complying with health and safety, environmental and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines

Restore and reinstate work location
14. label and store the removed components in designated location
15. store tools and equipment safely and securely, leaving the work area in a safe condition in accordance with organisational procedures
16. dispose of waste materials in line with legislative and organisational procedures
17. record and report results of the removal of plant and apparatus in accordance with organisational procedures
18. report unavailable or defective tools, equipment and resources, where appropriate
19. report problems outside role responsibility to designated personnel in line with organisational procedures, where appropriate​​​


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

**General** 1. the principles of health and safety in the workplace, environmental legislation and relevant regulations in relation to the work to be carried out 2. the organisations reporting lines, authorisation roles and responsibilities 3. the organisational safety rules, policies and procedures in relation to removing plant and apparatus in the power utilities environment **Removing plant and apparatus** 4. the organisational procedures and processes for reporting problems with tools and equipment 5. the processes and procedures to be followed for inspecting and preparing tools and equipment prior to use     6. how to read and interpret the, procedures and information sources used to make sure that tools and equipment are fit for purpose and safe to use 7. how to select, inspect and use personal protective equipment 8. what materials and substances are dangerous and hazardous to health 9. how to maintain safe working and environmental practices throughout the duration of the work minimising the risks to self and others 10. how to respond to the different types and categories of emergency situations that might occur 11. how to carry out a site risk assessment, identify hazards and assess risks of the site and proposed activity 12. how to remove plant and apparatus using specified removal principles, methods, processes and procedures 13. what handling techniques and equipment to adopt and use when removing plant and apparatus 14. company work instructions, information and reporting systems and documentation 15. how to recognise and report inaccurate and incorrect work instructions and documentation  16. how to leave the work area secure and the importance of doing so 17.  how to handle and dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials ​
