Overview
This standard covers installing and maintaining domestic gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances. This work must be in accordance with the current versions of the appropriate industry standards and regulation, industry recognised working practices, the specification, the working environment and the natural environment.
To meet this standard you will be able to:
- plan and prepare the work using job specifications, instructions and any tools, equipment and materials required
- install, exchange, disconnect, de-commission, commission and maintain these appliances
- communicate with all customers and members of the public
This standard is suitable for a craftsperson or technician working independently in the gas energy supply and use sector.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
Plan and prepare work activities for installing and maintaining gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances
1. communicate with the property occupier and other people who will be affected by the work throughout the process
2. select, inspect and wear relevant personal protective equipment for completing work activities in line with organisational procedures
3. carry out a site specific risk assessment of the work, identifying hazards and the required control measures
4. survey the work site for any pre-installation and maintenance damage or defects to existing building features and record it
5. protect the work site and the building fabric against possible damage being caused during the de-commissioning, installation and maintenance process
6. check and confirm all materials, tools and equipment necessary for the decommissioning, installation and maintenance process are available and fit for purpose
7. check and confirm that the proposed siting of the appliance meets the manufacturers and industry standard requirements for location, siting and clearances
8. check and confirm that the gas and electricity supply, the provision of ventilation and chimney meet the manufacturers and industry standards, where appropriate
9. carry out all necessary checks and tests to confirm the gas supply, electricity supply and where required, the chimney system meet the manufacturers' and industry requirements for the installation
10. check existing installation for any unsafe appliances and system components and apply the gas industry unsafe situations procedures, where appropriate
De-commission gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances
11. check that conditions within the gas and electricity systems will permit safe de-commissioning
12. select and use the correct tools and equipment for de-commissioning, installation and maintenance activities
13. use designated safe isolation methods, tests and procedures to de-commission gas and electricity systems and components
14. take precautionary actions to ensure that temporarily de-commissioned appliances, systems or components don not present a safety hazard
15. remove and disconnect appliances, gas components and electricity system, where appropriate

- use tightness testing and purging procedures to confirm the integrity of the installed or reconnected gas system and appliance
- use electrical testing procedures to confirm the integrity of the installed or reconnected electrical system and appliance
- use industry standard checks and testing procedures to confirm the integrity of the installed or existing chimney system and appliance flue seals
- take precautionary actions to prevent the unauthorised use of uncommissioned gas appliances, systems electrical systems and components by isolation procedures and use of warning notices
Pre-commission and commission domestic gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances to industry standards
28. confirm the completed work complies with the manufacturers' specification, industry standards and relevant regulations

35. check and confirm the operation of the gas appliance, the gas system and components to ensure they function safely and operate in accordance with manufacturers' instructions
36. check and confirm the electrical system and components function safely and operate in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions
37. explain to the property occupier the correct operation of the gas system and appliance providing them with a copy of relevant literature
38. take precautionary actions to prevent the unauthorised use of un-commissioned gas appliances, gas systems, electrical systems and components by isolation procedures and use of warning notices
Use and communicate data and information to carry out de-commissioning, installation, maintenance and commissioning work
39. liaise with the property occupier and other people who will be affected by the work during the planning, de-commissioning, installation, maintenance and commissioning processes to minimise disturbance to the job
40. use normative documents, industry standards and information from manufacturers' instructions for the appliance to ensure the work is done to the specification
41.check the customer is satisfied with the finished job
42. report information on the work to the relevant persons
43. record and complete all documentation in line with industry standards
44. deal with problems safely and efficiently, referring matters which cannot be rectified to the appropriate person
