Conduct basic marking out in engineering construction

URN: ECISAEC08
Business Sectors (Suites): Supporting Activities in Engineering Construction
Developed by: ECITB
Approved on: 02 Mar 2021

Overview

This standard is about conducting basic marking out of materials in engineering construction.

You will need to be able to conduct basic marking out of materials to specification as part of a standard preparation prior to undertaking engineering construction activities whilst adhering to health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and safe working practices.

In the context of this standard, your responsibility is limited to working within clearly defined procedures and following instructions from trade/craft personnel.  In some cases, you may still be expected to refer to others for final authorisations, even though you remain responsible for identifying and implementing decisions within the limits of your responsibility.

This standard is for

This standard is for those that are supporting activities in engineering construction.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work safely at all times, complying with health, safety, environmental and other relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and local rules or procedures
  2. ensure that the work environment, material, tools and equipment are suitably prepared for the activities to be undertaken
  3. identify the correct drawings and specification and ensure they are the most up to date versions
  4. identify and interpret basic marking out information from the drawings and specification(s)
  5. identify and select the correct tools and equipment to conduct the marking out activities
  6. prepare suitable datum and marking out surfaces
  7. mark out using the correct approved methods
  8. check the marking out complies with the drawing(s) and specification(s)
  9. seek confirmation that the marking out is completed to the required standard and complies with the drawing(s) and specification(s) where appropriate
  10. reinstate the work area
  11. deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that have been and those that cannot be solved

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. relevant legislative, regulatory and local requirements or procedures and safe working practices including your responsibilities with regards to reporting lines and procedures
  2. preparation and reinstatement requirements in respect of the work area, tools, material, and equipment, and the possible consequences of incorrect actions in these areas
  3. the basic principles of document control including version control of drawings and specifications
  4. the fundamental principles, uses and conventions of engineering drawings and related specifications
  5. surface preparation requirements and methods
  6. the tools, methods and techniques used for marking out
  7. fundamental geometric principles
  8. related quality control checks
  9. tool and equipment control: the correct use of relevant tools and equipment and your individual responsibility for the use, care and security of those you use

Scope/range

Glossary

Prepare suitable datum and marking out surfaces

In the context of this function, basic marking out, the preparation of suitable datum means activities such as basic cleaning of the material by removing grease, rust, loose scale and any sharp edges formed by cutting the material which could cause injury.

In the context of this function, basic marking out, the preparation of marking surfaces means activities such as checking that the materials are straight and coating the surface with a medium which will increase the clarity of the marked out object such as marking blue, chalk etc.
