Overview

This standard is about the repairing of instrumentation and controls equipment and systems within engineering construction plant.

You will need to be able to repair instrumentation and controls equipment and systems safely and effectively whilst adhering to  health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and safe working practices.
 
In the context of this standard, your responsibility is to interpret and work within given specifications, selecting methods and techniques to achieve the best possible result.  In some cases, you may still be expected to refer to others for final authorisation, even though you remain responsible for identifying and implementing decisions.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. work safely at all times, complying with health, safety, environmental and other relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and local rules or procedures 2. ensure that the **work environment**, materials, tools and equipment are suitably prepared for the work activities to be undertaken, correctly putting in place backup equipment or systems, if needed 3. follow the relevant instructions, technical drawings or other instructions for the instrumentation and control equipment or system to be repaired 4. check the equipment or system being repaired to see if it is possible to identify why it is being repaired and if there is any additional damage or defects to the related equipment or system 5. prepare the instrumentation and control equipment or system for repair 6. carry out the repairs as required 7. check that the repaired instrumentation and control equipment or system meets the specified operating conditions 8. complete records of the repair work carried out, according to the required procedures 9. **reinstate the work area** 10. deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that have been and those that cannot be solved

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. relevant legislative, regulatory and local requirements or procedures and safe working practices with regard to reporting lines and procedures 2. preparation and reinstatement requirements in respect of the work area, material and tools, the equipment or system to be repaired and, the possible consequences of incorrect actions in these areas 3. relevant instructions, technical drawings or other specifications for the instrumentation and control equipment or system to be repaired  4. where to locate specific information needed in order to carry out repairs correctly 5. methods and techniques used to repair instrumentation and control equipment or systems including: * the reasons for repair * the process(es) for putting in place backup equipment or systems, if needed, whilst repairs are undertaken  6. how to identify and check instrumentation and control equipment and systems for defects i.e. wear, fatigue, erosion damage and corrosion  7. what action(s) should be taken in relation to any defects found 8. what action should typically be taken if it is not possible to repair the instrumentation and control equipment or system and any related components 9. tool and equipment control:  the correct use of relevant tools and equipment and your individual responsibility for the use, care and security of those you use

Reinstate the work area
This term could include:

  • returning the work area to a safe condition
  • removing barriers
  • sweeping up
  • correctly disposing of waste materials
  • storing re-usable materials, consumables and equipment in accordance with appropriate procedures
  • completing  all necessary documentation
