This standard is about the removing and replacing  instrumentation and control components from equipment and systems in engineering construction plant.

You will need to be able to remove the components using approved tools and techniques, check the condition of them and record those that need replacing.  You will need to be able to be able to replace the components in the correct sequence, making any necessary settings or adjustments to ensure they function correctly.  The removal and replacement of instrumentation and controls components must be done safely and effectively to requirements whilst  adhering to health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and safe working practices.
In the context of this standard, your responsibility is to interpret and work within given specifications, selecting methods and techniques to achieve the best possible result.  In some cases, you may still be expected to refer to others for final authorisation, even though you remain responsible for identifying and implementing decisions.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. work safely at all times, complying with health, safety, environmental and other relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and local rules or procedures 2. ensure that the **work environment**, materials, tools and equipment are suitably prepared for the work activities to be undertaken including undertaking isolations and disconnections safely and correctly 3. establish what is being removed and, where appropriate, mark component orientation and note configuration for reassembly  4. remove the required instrumentation and controls components using the correct  tools and techniques 5. take appropriate precautions to prevent damage to components, tools and equipment during removal, storage and replacement 6. check the condition of the removed instrumentation and controls components against specification and identify any defects including wear, fatigue and corrosion 7. record which instrumentation and controls components need replacing, according to the required procedures  8. label and store or discard the removed instrumentation and control components in accordance with approved procedures 9. obtain the instrumentation and control components for replacement 10. ensure the replacement instrumentation and control components to be used meet the required specification 11. replace the instrumentation and control components, using the appropriate tools and techniques, in the correct sequence 12. set the instrumentation and control components up and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that they function correctly 13. **reinstate the work area** 14. deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that have been and those that cannot be solved

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. relevant legislative, regulatory and local requirements or procedures and safe working practices including your responsibilities with regard to reporting lines and procedures 2. preparation and reinstatement requirements in respect of: * the work area, materials, tools, and equipment * isolations and disconnections * the possible consequences of incorrect actions in these areas 3. relevant engineering drawings and related specifications 4. instrumentation and control component removal methods and techniques including marking, labelling and tagging 5. instrumentation and control component defects including wear, fatigue and corrosion: * what defects to check for * how to check for them * what to do if found  6. procedures for labelling and storing instrumentation and control components for reuse 7. instrumentation and control component replacement techniques including how to use related equipment and how to obtain the replacement components 8. the procedures that must be followed to ensure that the replacement components are set up and work correctly 9. reporting documentation and control procedures 10. tool and equipment control:  the correct use of relevant tools and equipment and your individual responsibility for the use, care and security of those you use

  • on access structures (scaffold)
  • on open structures
  • onshore and offshore installations
  • shafts
  • shipyards
  • tunnels

Reinstate the work area
This term could include:

  • returning the work area to a safe condition
  • removing barriers
  • sweeping up
  • correctly disposing of waste materials
  • storing re-usable materials, consumables and equipment in accordance with appropriate procedures
  • completing  all necessary documentation
