Overview

1. work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and local rules or procedures 2. ensure that the **work environment**, material, tools and equipment are suitably prepared for the activities to be undertaken * prepare to undertake testing or monitoring: * ensure you have the correct testing equipment 3. prepare the testing equipment 4. establish the required performance criteria for the electrical equipment or system being tested 5. set up the testing or monitoring equipment: * check that the calibration is correct * take the environmental conditions into account 6. carry out  testing or monitoring, taking care to prevent any ingress and to exclude foreign material 7. ensure all necessary testing data has been captured 8. review the testing data by: * taking into account the test conditions * checking it is within expected parameters * checking if it is accurate and thorough 9. analyse and review the test data and compare it, as relevant, against the equipment or system’s: * testing data history * relevant specification or manufacturers’ information 10. record the results of the assessment in a clear and accurate manner, identifying any faults and variations 11. recommend any relevant actions that should be taken, in accordance with procedures 12. **reinstate the work area**

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. relevant legislative, regulatory and local requirements or procedures and safe working practices including your responsibilities with regard to reporting lines and procedures
  2. preparation and reinstatement requirements in respect of the work area, materials, tools and equipment, and the possible consequences of incorrect actions in these areas
  3. relevant engineering test specifications and manufacturers’ information
  4. the difference between testing and monitoring 
  5. testing and monitoring techniques including the techniques for ingress protection, foreign material exclusion and the impact that different environmental conditions can have
  6. how to set up, check the functionality and calibration of the equipment that is being used for testing or monitoring including taking into account environmental conditions
  7. how to review the testing data, what types of anomalies may be found and what action to take if found
  8. how to analyse monitoring and test data in order to carry out an assessment 
  9. the documentation used to report on test results and test analysis and the importance of correctly recording the test results

  10. what action(s) should be taken in relation to:

    • the outcome of the assessment
    • relevant procedures and reporting lines

  11. tool and equipment control:  the correct use of relevant tools and equipment and your individual responsibility for the use, care and security of those you use
