Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment and systems in engineering construction plant

This standard is about carrying out preventative and corrective maintenance procedures on electrical equipment and systems in engineering construction plant.

You will need to safely and effectively carry out preventative and corrective maintenance activities (including inspections) to ensure the electrical equipment and systems are functioning as specified, this includes making adjustments and recommending actions to be taken, as appropriate. 

 

In the context of this standard, your responsibility is to interpret and work within given specifications, selecting methods and techniques to achieve the best possible result.  In some cases, you may still be expected to refer to others for final authorisation, even though you remain responsible for identifying and implementing decisions. 

This standard is for electrical maintenance technicians and those that maintain electrical plant, equipment and systems.

1. work safely at all times, complying with health, safety, environmental and other relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and local rules or procedures 2. ensure that the **work environment**, materials, tools and equipment are suitably prepared for the work activities to be undertaken 3. interpret the required performance criteria for the equipment or system  4. carry out preventative maintenance on the equipment and systems to prevent failure e.g. clean 5. undertake routine inspections of the electrical equipment or system to check if it is working as expected 6. undertake any necessary maintenance and inspection related testing procedures including interrogation  7. interpret the testing results and adjust the electrical equipment and systems, as required  8. after adjusting the electrical equipment, retest it to confirm that it now meets the required operating specification 9. if the adjusted electrical equipment fails to meet the required operating specification, adjust and retest again, as appropriate 10. record the outcome of the inspection, testing and adjustment including: * positive reporting * highlighting any causes for concern * recommend relevant actions to be taken * report any instances where the equipment fails to meet the required performance after adjustments 11. complete maintenance records accurately and pass them to the appropriate person  12. **reinstate the work area**

1. relevant legislative, regulatory and local requirements or procedures and safe working practices including your responsibilities with regard to reporting lines and procedures 2. preparation and reinstatement requirements in respect of the work area, materials, tools, and equipment, and the possible consequences of incorrect actions in these areas 3. the performance requirements of electrical equipment and systems that you are maintaining including: * how the equipment and systems should operate * how to source and interpret the related manufacturers’ and company specifications 4. the importance of preventative and corrective maintenance and the difference between the two 5. preventative maintenance, routine inspection, scheduled maintenance and monitoring and their: * reasons and benefits * requirements, including tools and equipment used * related testing procedures 6. the different types of adjustment techniques and their requirements 7. tool and equipment control:  the correct use of relevant tools and equipment and your individual responsibility for the use, care and security of those you use  8. maintenance records and related documentation procedures

This term could include:

• returning the work area to a safe condition
• removing barriers
• sweeping up
• correctly disposing of waste materials
• storing re-usable materials, consumables and equipment in accordance with appropriate procedures
• completing  all necessary documentation
