Use digital technology and information effectively and securely
Overview
This standard is about knowing how to interpret and following work related specifications, instructions, documentation and procedures, understanding why it is particularly important to follow handover procedures and to complete documentation correctly.
You need to work safely and effectively at all times, interpreting and following work related documentation and following procedures which should ensure that you: deliver as required, meet the required quality and, adhere to health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and safe working practices.
In the context of this standard, your responsibility is to interpret and follow work instructions, following given procedures which have been developed by specialists within your organisation. If there is an instance where the work related documentation or procedure cannot be met or where a variation from them is required, you remain responsible for identifying and reporting this in accordance with your company process.
Who this standard is for
This standard is for those that work in technical and craft roles throughout engineering construction including maintenance technicians (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls), installers (mechanical, electrical and pipe), platers, welders, steel erectors, riggers, those that move loads, NDT technicians, onsite machinists and those that monitor the condition of plant and systems.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- use digital information and technology securely, according to company procedures
- search, find and use work-related digital information, as requested by a supervisor, to support delivery of work-related tasks
- handle digital content in order to communicate information, as required for your role in accordance with requests or procedures
- operate relevant digital technology and equipment, as relevant to your role
- use technology to save and send digital information, in accordance with procedures
- access appropriate help and support when problems with digital technology arise
- use a range of available technology for training and professional development
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the need for security of digital data and technology in the workplace, the reasons for and importance of this, including relevant legal aspects
- permission levels related to data access
- the role of passwords in data security and how to manage passwords effectively, as appropriate for your role
- how to use software and digital systems necessary for your role
- how to use digital technology and equipment necessary for your role
- how to search online, safely and appropriately to find digital *information related to your role *
- how to handle digital content and online information, as relevant to your role
- understand how to verify if information, related to the task in hand and job role, is appropriate and correct
- how to learn and work and remotely using IT
- the benefits of e-learning and immersive technology for training and professional development and how to use and access this
