Overview

This standard is about contributing to the control of work quantities and costs by implementing works quantities and cost control systems, identifying opportunities and recommending ways to make cost savings, investigating any variations and agreeing and implementing corrective action in accordance with current organisational requirements which are equal to or exceed current statutory and legislative requirements
This standard is for people working in the occupational area of construction site supervision which is defined as the supervision of multiple construction trades and disciplines and can be used by operatives, supervisors and managers


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1      contribute to your organisational requirements in relation to controlling work quantities and costs

P2      collect, evaluate and report work quantities and cost data in relation to at least three of the following:

  • materials
  • plant, machinery and equipment
  • workforce
  • sub-contractors
  • recorded works
  • programmes and schedules

P3      identify and report at least two of the following opportunities for cost savings to the people responsible:

  • waste reduction
  • resource management and logistics
  • applications of new technologies and materials
  • energy and utility management
  • receipt and use of materials
  • alternative sources and types of materials
  • alternative suppliers of labour, materials and equipment
  • document control and record keeping
  • alternative methods of work

P4      investigate any variations to work cost or quantities, record the outcomes and implement the appropriate corrective action with the people responsible in relation to one of the following:

  • restore progress in accordance with agreed programme
  • agree new completion dates
  • identify potential variation
  • secure additional resources
  • alter planned work

You need to know and understand:

Implement systems to control works quantities and costs 

  • K1 how to implement systems to control work quantities and costs according to organisational requirements in relation to:
    • K1.1 accurate take-off schedules
    • K1.2 organisational waste targets
    • K1.3 recording receipt, usage and wastage of materials
    • K1.4 on and off hirer of tools and equipment
    • K1.5 use of consumables
    • K1.6 transport
  • K2 how to use the systems implemented to provide early indication warnings of potential issues

Collect quantity and cost data 

  • K3 how to collect and record work quantities and cost data relating to:
