Overview

This standard is about supervising lifting activities, evaluation, implementation and compliance with given instructions to ensure a safe and healthy work environment by identifying all necessary equipment, resources, procedures and environmental sustainability requirements and ensuring that personnel are briefed and aware of their health and safety responsibilities
This standard is for people who have the responsibility for supervising lifting operations using lifting equipment and can be used by operatives, supervisors and managers


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

Performance criteria 1
Identify and assess faults and problems
1.1 determine the requirements of the lift plan
1.2 identify and relay any faults or problems, potential solutions, corrective actions and record recommendations
1.3 communicate all lifting activity faults and problems or recommendations and any lift plan amendments to the relevant persons
Performance criteria 2
Identify, assess and maintain resources
2.1 identify, assess, coordinate and maintain the necessary resources for the lifting activity
2.2 ensure the identification of, suitability for, coordinating and maintenance of the following resources, applicable to the lifting activity:
2.2.1 people
2.2.2 lifting equipment and accessories
2.2.3 materials and components
2.2.4 work area and facilities

Conduct pre-work checks
3.1 conduct and communicate lift plan pre-work checks so that statutory requirements and official guidance are met in relation to the following:
3.1.1 testing
3.1.2 examination
3.1.3 inspection
3.1.4 certification
3.2 maintain safe working methods and practices for lifting activities by undertaking pre-work and ongoing checks. Communicate actions to the workforce and lifting team for the following:
3.2.1 condition
3.2.2 fit for purpose
3.2.3 health and safety
3.2.4 environmental
3.2.5 people
3.2.6 working area
3.2.7 ground conditions
Performance criteria 4
Carry out the supervision of lifting activities
4.1 carry out the supervision of lifting activities following given data and information which will minimise disruption and maintain optimum performance in relation to the following:
4.1.1 freely suspended loads
4.1.2 above ground operations
4.1.3 below ground operations
4.1.4 lifting of persons
4.1.5 dismantling operations
4.1.6 excess height lifts
4.1.7 multiple lifting
4.1.8 pick-and-carry
4.1.9 where the operator does not have clear sight of the load
4.1.10 loading and unloading

Observe legislation and guidelines
5.1 observe current legislation and official guidance appropriate to the work environment to ensure the protection of the workforce, lifting team, the general public, visitors and the environment by the application of sources of given information
Performance criteria 6
Keep accurate records of work progress
6.1 check the progress and quality of the work, stopping when required due to issues encountered
6.2 create or complete records of work progress checks which detail completed work, quantities involved and any faults or problems encountered
Performance criteria 7
Conduct post-work checks
7.1 ensure completion of the work method documentation by undertaking post-work checks to confirm that the working area and equipment are left in a safe state and all resources are removed
Performance criteria 8
Conduct post work feedback
8.1 conduct post-work feedback activities with the lifting team and workforce on completion of the lifting activities, to determine the efficiency of working methods and how improvements can be made to optimise future performance
