Overview

This standard is about hanging foundation papers (cross), textured/relief and patterned finishing papers in non-complex locations and includes providing protection to the work area

This standard will also involve interpreting information, adopting safe, healthy and environmentally responsible work practices, selecting and using materials, tools and equipment, in accordance with organisational requirements which are equal to or exceed current statutory and legislative requirements  

This standard is for people working in the occupational area of Painting and Decorating and can be used by operatives, supervisors and managers


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

Interpretation of information
P1   interpret the information relating to the work and resources to confirm its relevance for the following:
•    drawings
•    specifications
•    schedules
•    risk assessments
•    method statements
•    manufacturers’ information
•    technical data sheets
•    safety data sheets
•    current legislation and regulations governing buildings  

Safe work practices
P2   comply with the relevant legislation and official guidance to carry out the work and maintain safe and healthy work practices relating to the following:
•    methods of work
•    safe use of health and safety control equipment
•    safe use of access equipment
•    safe use, storage and handling of materials, tools and equipment
•    specific risks to health, including mental health
•    specific risks associated with asbestos containing materials
•    specific risks associated with surface coatings containing lead

Selection of resources

P3   calculate and select the required quantity and quality of resources for the methods of work for:

  • materials
  • components and fixings
  • tools and equipment

Minimise the risk of damage
P4    comply with organisational procedures to minimise the risk of damage to the work and surrounding area by:

  • protecting the work, surrounding areas and adjacent finishes or surfaces from damage
  • maintaining a clear and tidy work area
  • disposing of waste in accordance with current legislation

Approach to the work
P5   complete the work within the estimated, allocated time, in accordance with organisational procedures, the programme of work and to meet the needs of other occupations and client

Meet the contract specification
P6   comply with the contract information to hang wallcoverings efficiently to the required specification by:
•    demonstrating work skills to:
     -    shade
     -    measure 
     -    match 
     -    cut
     -    mix and apply adhesive
     -    fold
     -    position
     -    fix
     -    trim
     -    clean-off

•    using and maintaining hand tools and associated equipment

•    establishing start and finishing points and hang wallcoverings of substantial lengths to working instructions to the following: 
     -    ceilings with any type of paper
     -    walls with both internal and external angles, using the following:
          o    foundation papers (cross) 
          o    matching patterned textured/relief papers or matching patterned finishing papers

P3 Selection of resources
