Overview

This standard describes the skill and knowledge required to develop and plan improvements to environmental performance. The standard looks at the planning, implementation and review of improvements to environmental performance.

This standard would be appropriate for:
1 A manager with responsibility for environmental management and/or sustainability
2 An owner/manager of a business seeking to improve the environmental performance of the organisation
3 An individual with a specific brief to improve environmental performance
4 An environmental management systems co-ordinator or equivalent
5 A consultant providing environmental advice

This standard covers the implementation of these plans and the communication and development of others to ensure success.

It also covers the review and evaluation of the plan and its implementation and the future implications of this.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 confirm that the resources will support the implementation of plans to
improve environmental performance
P2 develop plans in accordance with organisational and legislative requirements and within the required timescales and budgets
P3 implement plans in a manner which enables colleagues and others to contribute, ensuring that they have the information and skills needed
P4 implement plans in a way which maximises the benefits to the organisation and to the environment
P5 develop measures to monitor improvements implemented
P6 monitor and evaluate implementation in accordance with organisational requirements
P7 obtain the views of relevant interested parties as part of monitoring and evaluation
P8 review the effectiveness of the monitoring process and use the results to improve future practice
P9 take effective action where implementation is not being achieved in accordance with the plans
P10 communicate the results of the evaluation to interested parties
P11 establish the impact of the implementation and the benefits to the organisation


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1 the reasons for and benefits of continual improvement of environmental performance
K2 resources required to implement potential improvements to environmental performance
K3 the types and sources of information required for planning
K4 relevant environmental, legal and other non-regulatory environmental requirements applicable to the organisation
K5 how to recognise the need for, and obtain, additional expertise and information within the required timescales
K6 ways in which interested parties can be involved in the planning process, and reasons for their involvement
K7 the process of developing a measurable, timetabled and systematic implementation plan
K8 potential obstacles to improving environmental performance and how to take these into account during planning
K9 the necessary content of plans to improve environmental performance
K10 the appropriate presentation of plans for different purposes and different
audiences
K11 reasons for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of implementation
K12 methods for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of implementation
K13 organisational requirements and procedures for monitoring and evaluating implementation
K14 the ways in which the results of the evaluation should be communicated
K15 the types of documentation required for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of plans
