Promote Efficient Transport Usage within Sustainable Business Practice
Overview
This standard is about developing policies and guidelines that will improve and develop the efficient use of transport for an organisation. It also includes being able to determine levels of transport usage, identifying opportunities for improving transport efficiency, and promoting programmes to improve transport efficiency within an organisation. The standard promotes the use of low carbon fuel as an energy source.
This standard would be appropriate for:
1 A manager with responsibility for transport efficiency
2 An owner/manager of a business seeking to improve the transport efficiency for the organisation
3 An individual with a specific brief to develop transport efficiency
4 A consultant providing advice on transport efficiency
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 establish current levels of transport usage
P2 identify the legal requirements that control transport usage
P3 identify opportunities for improving transport efficiency
P4 specify efficiency measures and targets for each area of transport usage
P5 identify potential barriers that may limit transport efficiency
P6 specify the monitoring procedures and their frequency to control transport usage
P7 identify opportunities for sourcing low carbon fuel
P8 advise on the design of processes and products to help ensure efficient transport usage
P9 promote and support the implementation of efficiency measures for all areas of transport usage
P10 promote the application of low carbon energy in transport usage
P11 define and allocate roles/responsibilities to improve transport efficiency
P12 establish training needs and organise training for those responsible for improving transport efficiency
P13 develop and implement strategy to overcome barriers that limit the impact of efficiency measures
P14 establish methods to evaluate the impact of measures to improve transport efficiency
P15 support the implementation of monitoring and control procedures for efficiency measures
P16 evaluate impact of measures to improve the efficiency of transport
P17 specify benefits achieved through efficiency measures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 the impact of different forms of transport on the environment and sustainability
K2 how transport usage impacts on environmental issues such as climate change
K3 the legal requirements that control different types of transport
K4 the environmental, economic and social costs associated with different types of transport
K5 causes/sources of carbon emissions from transport
K6 the benefits of efficient transport usage to the organisation
K7 how to establish current levels of transport usage across the product life cycle
K8 transport costs and how they are formed
K9 how to assess organisational efficiency in transport
K10 principles of benchmarking transport on the environment and sustainability
K11 the efficiency methods available to an organisation for eliminating or reducing transport usage and improving efficiency
K12 the barriers that can limit the reduction of transport usage and how these barriers can be overcome
K13 logistical efficiency and the benefits it offers
K14 how effective process control and quality assurance can support efficiency within the supply chain
K15 how to define and allocate individual and team roles/responsibilities for all those involved in improving transport efficiency
K16 how to establish training needs and organise staff training to support efficient transport usage
K17 how to evaluate the impact of efficiency measures on transport efficiency
K18 how product design and the nature of the product (hazardous non-hazardous, bulk packaged) can impact upon transport efficiency
Scope/range
Benefits can be social, economic and environmental
Efficiency measures can be: improved utilisation of vehicles, collaboration with other operators, improving vehicle full rates, ‘back hauling’, and real time control etc.
Barriers can be economic, practical, social or legal
Legal requirements: Local, National and European
