Overview

This Standard covers the competence required to prepare alpha, beta, gamma radiation or contamination controlled work areas and may be applied to Post Operational Clean Out (POCO).


Generally, this unit should be applied to the work undertaken to prepare the work area for an activity which aids nuclear decommissioning and will not include positioning and construction of equipment.

This Standard deals with the following:

1. Prepare alpha, beta and gamma radiation/contamination controlled work areas

During this work you must take account of the relevant worksite operational requirements, procedures and safe working practices AS THEY APPLY TO YOU.


The activity is likely to be undertaken by someone working in a  Nuclear Decommissioning environment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations and guidelines
P2 ensure that the work environment is free from hazards and obstructions and is suitable for the work activities to be undertaken
P3 ensure that all necessary service supplies are connected and ready for use
P4 prepare the work areas so that they are ready for the engineering activities to be carried out
P5 make sure that required safety arrangements are in place to protect other workers from any activities which are likely to disrupt normal working
P6 inform the appropriate people when work area preparations are completed
P7 deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that cannot be solved

K3 the consequences of not preparing work areas correctly
K4 service supply and connection procedures
K5 how to identify materials and recognise defects
K6 material handling and preparation methods and techniques
K7 the properties and hazards associated with working in alpha beta and gamma radiation areas
K8 the use of `working time limits' in the control of alpha beta and gamma radiation exposure
K9 tool and equipment care and control procedures
K10 reporting lines and procedures
