Overview

This standard identifies the competencies you need to maintain the safe transportation of hydrogen product in-line with operational and regulatory requirements.
  
You will be required to demonstrate that you can conduct regular checks on the road tankers, equipment and hydrogen product, monitoring the load and maintaining safe and secure transportation, meeting organisational and legal requirements.

This could include individuals working in the following industries, Chemical, Petro-Chemicals, Storage and Energy production.

Please Note:

For the purpose of this Standard, a Road Tanker is defined as a specialised transport vehicle designed for the safe and efficient transportation of large quantities of hydrogen, typically in its liquid or compressed gaseous state. These tankers are essential for the distribution of hydrogen to refuelling stations, industries, and other consumers who require hydrogen as an energy source or for various applications.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1. complete all legal requirements and industry-approved documents related to the safe road transportation of the hydrogen product
P2. conduct regular checks on the vehicle, hydrogen product, and equipment to ensure they comply with organisational and regulatory requirements
P3. handle and secure hydrogen products safely, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
P4. monitor the hydrogen product load during transport in line with organisational and regulatory requirements
P5. communicate effectively with other participants involved in the transportation process in line with organisational and regulatory requirements
P6. identify and respond promptly to potential safety hazards during transport, and follow organisational and legal requirements for emergency response and reporting.
P7. maintain a safe and secure transportation environment for hydrogen products by driving in accordance with organisational and legal requirements and industry good practices


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1. the current organisation and legal documentation related to the safe transportation of hydrogen products
K2. the properties, hazards and risks of hydrogen product, including its potential for fire, explosion, asphyxiation, and as a cryogenic liquid
K3. the health and safety risks associated with transporting hydrogen product, and the measures required to mitigate those risks
K4. the importance of proper handling and securing of hydrogen product during transport, and the role of placarding and marking in identifying hazardous material
K5. the organisational and legal requirements for the transportation of hydrogen products
K6. the industry-approved documents for hydrogen transportation, including regulations and guidelines for safe driving of road tankers
K7. the organisational and legal operating procedures for transporting hydrogen products
K8. the procedures for hydrogen transportation, including company emergency response plan.
K9. the organisational and legal requirements for drivers’ hours and tachographs
K10. the hazards associated with driver fatigue, how to identify the early signs and the importance of taking rest breaks
K11. how to maintain a clean and tidy road tanker and understand the importance of good housekeeping
K12. the organisational and legal requirements effective for reporting tanker and equipment defects
K13. the principles of emergency response, in urban areas, remote areas and road traffic accidents and off-road accidents and incidents
K14. how to contact the emergency services and your role in an emergency situation
K15. the employing organisation on-call person or line manager and how to contact them
