Overview

​This standard addresses the competences required to respond to incidents, hazardous conditions and emergencies.

To demonstrate your competence you must generate, gather, present evidence of reporting and correcting incidents, hazardous conditions and emergencies.

This includes:


1 Fire
2 Toxic vapour and or liquid release
3 Injured personnel
4 Major plant or service failure
5 Flood
6 Uncontrolled release of hydrocarbons
7 Explosions

This standard deals with the following:


1 Report incidents, hazardous conditions and emergencies
2 Contribute to the correction of incidents, hazardous conditions and emergencies

During this work you must take account of the relevant operational requirements and safe working practices AS THEY APPLY TO YOU.


This is suitable for those working in the downstream fuel environment.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 identify the nature, location and scope of incident
P2 raise the appropriate alarms
P3 report the incident to the appropriate people in accordance with plant reporting procedures
P4 provide accurate and unambiguous information to the appropriate people
P5 complete all relevant documentation
P6 follow appropriate procedures after the situation has been assessed
P7 inform appropriate people as actions are taken
P8 take the correct actions, in accordance with procedures, to make the process safe
P9 take the correct actions, in accordance with procedures, to deal with the incident
P10 minimise the incident, hazard or emergency
P11 minimise waste and loss
P12 act promptly and in association with others
P13 correctly modify actions in response to changing conditions
P14 work safely in accordance with operational requirements                                                                        

P15 select, use and care for personal protective equipment

You need to know and understand:

K1 the types of incidents which should be reported
K2 how the alarm should be raised for each type of incident
K3 how to access, site emergency plans, environmental procedures, plant emergency procedures
K4 how to communicate effectively to the correct people
K5 the procedure for responding at an early stage of an incident
K6 how to access, site emergency plans, environmental procedures, plant emergency procedures
K7 your own responsibilities during emergencies
K8 who to keep informed during the incident
K9 the potential incidents within your area of responsibility and the actions to be taken
K10 the need for and use of emergency equipment
K11 the appropriate first response to casualties
K12 the effect of the emergency on plant, equipment and personnel
