Overview

This Standard is about implementing the correct procedures for connecting wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment appropriate to electrical systems.

This Standard is for anyone who is involved with connecting wiring systems, wiring enclosures or equipment for live performance.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. connect wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment in line with health and safety requirements
  2. identify and address any foreseeable hazards in line with health and safety requirements
  3. identify appropriate means of electrical isolation prior to connection
  4. carry out isolation procedures to ensure a safe connection in accordance with electrical regulations and approved procedures
  5. carry out tests at appropriate stages in the process
  6. make connections in accordance with specifications and comply with wiring regulations as specified in relevant, current industry standards
  7. check that connections are electrically and mechanically sound and identified in a correct and clear manner in line with industry standards
  8. take safe and sensible action to remedy any identified defects after connection has taken place
  9. complete any necessary documentation about the work in accordance with organisational processes

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the main types of different electrical connections and their advantages and limitations
  2. the correct procedures for a safe isolation with regard to:
  3. an assessment of safe working practice,
  4. correct identification of circuits to be isolated,
  5. correct test and proving instruments selected,
  6. use of correct testing methods, and
  7. correct selection of devises for securing isolation.
  8. the implications for relevant parties of carrying out an isolation
  9. the procedures for the connection of single and multi-phase circuits
  10. how to interpret diagrams and drawings to facilitate the connection of wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment
  11. the procedures for proving a connection is electrically and mechanically sound
  12. why it is important to test individual elements prior to connection to system
  13. what is meant by PAT testing, when it is required and how it should be carried out.
  14. how to establish which connections in circuits and protective conductors including connections to terminals are suitable for the purpose for which they are being used
  15. the implications on the choice of connections with regard to permanent or temporary purposes
  16. the requirements of joints and connections to be of strength and conductance to allow for the passage of fault currents and to prevent corrosion
  17. organisational procedures for completion of necessary documentation
  18. the importance of using personal protective equipment and safe appropriate tools for specific jobs
  19. procedures for carrying out an assessment of safe systems of work including permits to work
  20. procedures for reporting any potentially dangerous situations or incidents
  21. current wiring regulations as specified in the latest industry standard relevant to types and uses of wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment
  22. current industry standards for temporary electrical systems for entertainment and related purposes
  23. where to find out about the principles of electrical theory which allow for the safe connection of electrical wiring systems and equipment
