Overview

This standard covers  the skills and knowledge required to research and develop concepts for new product designs, and present the new product ideas to others for open discussion. You will produce plans and provide any other supporting documentation on the concept, design and manufacturing processes required to create the new product.  Your role will include the ability to coordinate the design to manufacture process of the new product and communicate the product development process in line with workplace practise.​​​

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. select the research method for the precious product idea in line with industry best practice
  2. collate ideas and designs for new precious products in line with industry best practice
  3. research existing and emerging techniques and methodologies to inform own work in line with industry best practice
  4. draw detailed plans for the production of new precious products in line with project needs
  5. calculate manufacturing and development costs for new precious products in line with workplace instructions
  6. mitigate against production constraints in line with workplace instructions
  7. present and discuss new ideas with others in line with workplace instructions
  8. record any problems and solutions as they occur in the project in line with industry best practice
  9. inform others working on the project of problems and potential solutions in line with workplace instructions
  10. agree a plan of action with involved parties to produce new precious products in line with project needs
  11. manage developments within the production cycle of new precious products in line with workplace instructions
  12. keep records of all research, development and production activities in line with industry best practice

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. safety precautions to be taken when producing new product developments
  2. principles of planning, organising and costing production of new precious products
  3. time management skills
  4. the hallmarking regulations
  5. patents and copyrights
  6. how to create detailed drawings which include all required information
  7. regulatory and legislative requirements
  8. how  to present information to others
  9. production constraints and different ways to deal with these
  10. manufacturing techniques and processes
  11. common production problems and how to resolve these
  12. how to find sources of information on existing and emerging technologies
  13. how to locate and obtain materials and information
  14. formats to keep records in
  15. best practice in new product development within chosen jewellery industry
