Overview

This standard covers the skills to produce small and large scale chased products which includes the use of advanced techniques such as repousse, reverse relief work and complex flat chasing. 

You will work with heat treatments and punch forming techniques as well as designing your own advanced chased products.  In producing chased products, you will work to instructions and use a variety of specialist techniques. You will take personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work carried out.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. interpret drawings and specifications for advanced chased products in line with industry best practice
  2. transfer detail from drawings and specifications to metal using tools and templates in line with industry best practice
  3. design advanced chased images in line with the needs of the project
  4. produce chased work using a range of advanced t*echniques* in line with industry best practice
  5. produce chased work of varying sizes in line with project needs
  6. complete initial checks that components are dimensionally accurate, the forming is correct and there are no excessive marks visible in line with project needs
  7. use advanced chasing punches in production in line with industry best practice
  8. check the work for defects in line with project needs
  9. take action to rectify any defects detected in line with industry best practice
  10. complete the work to the given specification in line with workplace instructions

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. safety precautions to be taken when chasing
  2. the methods used to illustrate ideas of chased designs
  3. mathematical formulae and calculations
  4. methods of creating complex three-dimensional forms
  5. techniques of punch (textured and plain) manufacturing
  6. heat treatment techniques
  7. physical and working properties of different metals
  8. tools and equipment for prescribed tasks and processes
  9. how to check work pieces for dimensional accuracy
  10. materials suitable for making jigs and aids to chase single and double curvatures and for snarling
  11. punch forming techniques
  12. advanced silversmithing construction techniques and advanced chasing/repousse techniques
  13. how to check that the chasing meets the needs of the specification
  14. best practice in chasing within chosen industry
  15. the importance of following the given specification and timescale
  16. common defects and ways to rectify these
