Overview

This standard covers the skills to produce chased items using different techniques such as flat chasing, curved work, repousse work and the detailing of small castings.

You will interpret drawings and specifications and experiment with pitch recipes and use punch manufacturing amongst other techniques. You will visually check the quality of your work, report any defects and seek advice on the appropriate action to rectify them.  You will ensure that the finished work meets the required specification.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. interpret drawings and specifications in line with project needs
  2. transfer interpretations of drawings and specifications to metal using tools and templates in line with industry best practice
  3. design chased images in line with workplace instructions
  4. perform punch techniques in line with workplace instructions
  5. mix and develop pitch recipes in line with workplace instructions
  6. produce a range of chased items using various techniques in line with project needs
  7. seek support and guidance when problems arise in line with workplace instructions
  8. complete initial checks that components are dimensionally accurate, the forming is correct and there are no excessive marks visible in line with the needs of the project
  9. check the work for defects in line with project needs
  10. take action to rectify any defects detected in line with workplace instructions
  11. complete the work to the given specification in line with workplace instructions

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. safety precautions to be taken when chasing
  2. how to interpret drawings and specifications
  3. methods of illustrating ideas
  4. mathematical formulae and calculations
  5. methods of chasing three-dimensional forms
  6. techniques of punch (textured and plain) manufacturing
  7. heat treatment techniques
  8. who to ask for support and when to do so
  9. physical and working properties of metals
  10. tools and equipment for prescribed tasks and processes
  11. materials suitable for making jigs and aids for chasing
  12. forming techniques such as snarling
  13. silversmithing construction and chasing techniques
  14. how to check work pieces for dimensional accuracy
  15. how to check that the chasing meets the needs of the specification
  16. best practice in chasing within chosen industry
  17. the importance of following the given specification and timescales
  18. common defects and ways to rectify these
