Overview

This standard covers the skills to use hand tool applications to carry out hand engraving.  This includes basic block/script lettering and carving techniques on mostly flat surfaces to achieve patterns in relief or intaglio.

You will interpret design drawings and specifications and plan work sequences as well as finishing and polishing the pieces you make.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. interpret drawings and specifications in line with workplace instructions 
  2. plan the work sequence in line with project needs 
  3. select tools to achieve the specified outcome in line with project needs 
  4. check that tools are in usable condition in line with workplace instructions 
  5. measure and mark out in preparation for engraving in line with drawings and specifications
  6. position and hold the work piece in place without causing damage in line with workplace instructions 
  7. carry out work in line with workplace instructions 
  8. polish and finish the work piece using techniques suited to the material and specification in line with workplace instructions 
  9. check the work for defects in line with the needs of the project
  10. seek support and guidance when problems arise in line with workplace instructions
  11. take action to rectify any defects detected in line with workplace instructions
  12. complete the work to the given specification in line with workplace instructions

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. ​safety precautions to be taken when engraving
  2. engraving terminology
  3. how to interpret drawings and specifications
  4. the importance of carrying out work in a particular sequence
  5. different tools and their applications
  6. how to maintain tools
  7. how to measure and mark out work pieces using appropriate equipment for the task
  8. differing methods of securing work pieces
  9. who to ask for support and when to do so
  10. how to check that the engraving meets the needs of the specification
  11. best practice in engraving within chosen jewellery industry
  12. the importance of following the given specification and timescales
  13. common defects and ways to rectify these
