Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge you need to coat ceramic and associated products. (e.g. glaze, slip, varnish; by dipping, pouring, spraying, brushing, sponging, other). 

This standard is suitable for those who are self-employed, working for a sole practitioner or within a workshop or studio.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 check that products and materials meet the required standards before applying coating 

P2 apply the coating to crafted ceramics to the required standard 

P3 recognise any difficulties with coating crafted ceramics to the required quantity and quality and correct them, or report difficulties outside your control to the correct person

P4 use correct and serviceable tools, materials and equipment for the task 

P5 accurately identify any problems with materials, tools and equipment and correct them, or record or report themas appropriate

P6 carry out your work to the required quality and output to meet deadlines

P7 check that products you have coated meet the required standards identify variations of coated products from the required standard and record them or report them as appropriate


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1 the quality standards and production requirements for the crafted ceramics being coated 

K2 the checks which should be carried out before starting to coat crafted ceramics 

K3 the importance of checking products and coating materials before you start to coat 

K4 the differences in the ways in which you apply coating to simple and complex shapes and hollow and flat products 

K5 different methods for applying coatings to products and the problems which can occur 

K6 the factors which should be taken into account when coating crafted ceramics 

K7 the reasons why care should be taken when removing and handling coated products and what could happen if care was not taken 

K8 how coating material/slip is produced 

K9 common problems with coating material/slip and the faults that can occur as a result of problem material/slip
