Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge you need to model ceramic items. You will check materials and tools, monitor and control the modelling process, minimise waste and rework, make changes to how you work within the limits of your responsibility and ensure that completed models meet the required standards. 

This standard is suitable for those who are self-employed, working for a sole practitioner or within a workshop or studio.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 use the appropriate methods to model ceramics of the desired size and shape 

P2 use and handle materials, tools and equipment correctly and safely 

P3 add the required detail and achieve the desired finish to modelled items 

P4 ensure modelled items reach the correct standard of quality 

P5 identify any problems with modelled items, materials, tools and equipment and take the correct action to put them right; or report them to the appropriate person 

P6 carry out the task in a way that minimises risk of damage to modelled items, property and people 

P7 carry out the modelling task within a suitable timescale


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1 types of clay which can be used to model ceramics 

K2 the condition clay should be in for the task 

K3 the basic materials contained in the clay/s you use to model ceramics 

K4 the characteristics of the clay used to model ceramics 

K5 the preparation which should be carried out on the clay before it is used to model ceramics and what could happen if this was not done correctly 

K6 the process of modelling ceramics and what must be considered? 

K7 the process of achieving the required finish and detail to modelled ceramics 

K8 the importance of using materials ecoinomically 

K9 the tools and equipment required for modelling ceramics, and how to check that they are in good working order 

K10 how to prepare the required tools and eqipment for the modelling of ceramics 

K11 what problems can occur when modelling ceramics and the actions which should be taken to recify them 

K12 how to prevent harm being caused to modelled ceramic items, property and people when carrying out the task of modelling 

K13 what faults can appear and how these an be avoided and rectified where possible
