Overview

This standard covers decorating ceramic items using lithographs or transfer prints and consistently meeting quality standards. It requires that you apply both simple and complex patterns to both simple and complex shaped items of ceramic ware. 

This standard is suitable for those who are self-employed, working for a sole practitioner or within a workshop or studio.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

​You need to know and understand: 

P1 prepare items of ceramic ware for lithographing or transfer printing

P2 decorate items of ceramic ware by applying lithographs or transfer prints to the required standard 

P3 record variations of decorated items from the required standard

P4 recognise and correct or report any difficulties with decorating items to the required quantity and quality 

P5 keep legible and accurate records of production of decorated ceramic ware


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1 the required standard for items of ware you decorate 

K2 the differences in the ways in which you decorate simple and complex shapes 

K3 the importance of ensuring lithographs or transfer prints are positioned correctly 

K4 the differences between applying lithographs to biscuit and glost ware 

K5 what preparation of ware needs to be carried out before applying prints/lithographs to glost/biscuit ware 

K6 the problems which can arise when applying lithographs/prints and how to deal with these 

K7 variations which can occur in items whe they are decorated and how to deal with these 

K8 common glazing faults and repair methods 

K9 common faults which can occur during the firing process 

K10 how problems with lithographing and transfer printing can affect later stages in the making process 

K11 what production records you should keep and why this is important 

K12 why is it important to complete craftwork on time and to standard
