Overview
This standard covers the skills and knowledge you need to prepare to start your work. You are expected to prepare materials, tools, equipment and any machinery and check that it is fit to use. You will also prepare your work area so that you can carry out your work efficiently.
This standard is suitable for those who are self-employed, working for a sole practitioner or within a workshop or studio.

You must be able to:
P1 check that equipment and materials meet the required standards before processing
P2 produce plastic clay, slip or glaze to the standard required for your work
P3 recognise any difficulties with making plastic clay, slip or glaze to the required quantity and quality and correct them, or report difficulties outside your control to the correct person
P4 use correct and serviceable materials and equipment for each task
P5 accurately identify any problems with materials and equipment and correct them, or record or report them in line with your work instructions
P6 carry out your work to the required quality and output to meet production schedules and targets
P7 check that clay, slip or glaze you have made meet company standards
P8 identify variations of clay, slip or glaze from company standard and record them or report them to the correct person

K12 how to record faults/losses and the importance of keeping records of them
K13 the process that follows the making of clay, slip or glaze and faults that could arise which may affect the next stage of production
