Overview

​This standard is about inspecting and reporting on the original fabric, any proposed new build and restorations or renovations to heritage structures, sites or settings. Site visits, assessments and reports can be in relation to past or future restorations or renovations.

It includes interpreting requirements and parameters, assessing materials used and the quality of workmanship, photographing key aspects of sites, settings or structures, making recommendations and producing reports about how restoration or renovations have been, or can be, achieved.

This standard is for heritage consultants or anyone who is responsible for inspecting and reporting on restoration or renovations to heritage sites, settings or structures.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. ​obtain information about requirements and parameters of inspections and reports for restoration or renovation projects from appropriate people
  2. recommend how information about past or future restoration or renovation projects can be acquired to the level of detail required
  3. use appropriate methods to assess heritage sites, settings or structures in line with project requirements
  4. research relevant information about the history of heritage sites, settings or structures
  5. research materials or finishes used on heritage sites, settings or structures during the desired time period for the renovation or restoration works
  6. assess materials used and quality of workmanship against accepted standards
  7. make recommendations which preserve and incorporate heritage features
  8. make recommendations which comply with legal requirements for the protection of heritage, relevant good practice standards and any local planning requirements
  9. produce reports and photographs that accurately portray the condition of original fabric, restorations or renovations
  10. provide reports and photographs to clients and senior managers in line with agreed timescales
  11. provide technical advice within your area of expertise to support reports

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. ​sources of detailed information about project requirements and parameters for past and future restoration or renovation projects
  2. architectural history and the principles of architectural design and heritage features in relation to heritage structures
  3. how to obtain and interpret building plans and historic documents
  4. inspection methods for sites, settings and structures
  5. health and safety legislation and requirements associated with visiting sites, settings and structures
  6. legal requirements for the protection of heritage, good practice standards for the heritage industry, and any local planning requirements
  7. conservation and preservation methods relevant to the heritage sites, settings and structures you are assessing
  8. industry recognised standards for materials and quality of workmanship
  9. photographic techniques and settings to portray the condition of original fabric, restorations or renovations
  10. the contents of, and format for, a heritage consultancy report
  11. agreed timescales and how to work to a deadline
  12. techniques and channels for communication with clients and senior managers
  13. the extent and limits of your area of expertise in relation to assessments, reporting and technical advice
