URN: BSENZ07
Business Sectors (Suites): Environmental Technology Systems
Developed by: BSE Skills
Approved on: 30 Mar 2022

Overview

This standard is for those who are required to determine the requirements for use of environmental technologies in building services engineering.

The individual carrying out this work must be able to give advice on a range of environmental technologies, their suitability for use in a variety of situations and relevant legal and regulatory requirements. They must also consider the implications for the environment of specified work activities, organisational procedures and resource selection.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1.    access current information about the environmental technology system and equipment as it applies to the work activity from relevant:

  • sources of information
  • documentation

2.    identify the client's requirements for the configuration of the building services engineering products, including any environmental technologies

3.    advise relevant others on the advantages and disadvantages of diverse environmental technologies available in different situations

4.    explain the relevant legal and regulatory requirements that apply to the installation and operation of environmental technologies

5.    analyse the building features and fabric, and advise on the suitability of different environmental technologies

6.    assess the impact the installation of environmental technologies can have on building and system performance

7.    advise on the specified work activities and installation requirements for different environmental technologies

8.    specify work activities and procedures which minimise disruption to the environment

9.    specify work methods and resources which minimise risks to the environment and building fabric

10.  communicate to relevant others the operational characteristics and the service and maintenance requirements of different environmental technologies

11.  complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements

12.  deal promptly and effectively with any problems within the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability and report those which cannot be solved

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1.    the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

2.    the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role

3.    the characteristics and benefits of different environmental technologies

4.    the relevant legal and regulatory requirements governing the installation and operation of environmental technologies

5.    the current legal and regulatory requirements related to different types of buildings including relevant environmental performance standards

6.    the factors to consider when identifying whether it would be advantageous to install environmental technologies

7.    how to advise on situations in which would be advantageous to install environmental technologies

8.    how to advise on situations in which it would not be advantageous to install environmental technologies

9.    the impact installation of environmental technologies can have on the performance of buildings against relevant legal and regulatory requirements, and how to determine this in different situations

10.  the potential implications for the environment of work activities and procedures used in installing and maintaining environmental technology systems and components

11.  the specified work methods and resources which minimise damage or risks to the environment and building fabric including:

  • prefabrication and installation methods that reduce material wastage
  • materials and products that are hazardous to the environment and how to identify them and avoid or minimise their use
  • organisational procedures and legal requirements for handling and disposing of hazardous materials and products

12.  materials and products that are recyclable, how to identify them and organisational procedures to deal with them

13.  the information that requires to be communicated to relevant others about the operational characteristics and the service and maintenance requirements of different environmental technologies

14.  how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
