Inspect and commission Fire Dampers and Smoke Control Dampers
Overview
This standard is for those who inspect and commission fire dampers to maintain compartmentation where ventilation systems (ducts) pass through compartment boundaries. This standard is also for those who inspect and commission fire dampers and/or smoke control dampers to allow the release of smoke and heat and provide compartmentation protection to walls/floors/ducts where the release path is to be constrained.
The person performing this work should understand that Fire Dampers and Smoke Control Dampers are 2 different devices.
The person carrying out this work must be able to comply with the processes and procedures for the commissioning and handing over of a Fire Damper and Smoke Control Damper system and equipment in accordance with the current versions of the appropriate industry standards and regulations, the specification, industry recognised working practices, the working environment and the natural environment.
They must know, understand and apply the correct methods and procedures for the commissioning and handing over the Fire Damper and Smoke Control Damper system and equipment including the:
- identification and use of the correct instruments
- completion of the relevant documentation
- recording of relevant data and information
- identification and consideration of the customer's need for Fire Damper and Smoke Control Damper devices and equipment configuration
- planning of the resources required to carry out the commissioning process
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- verify that the job information and documentation are current and relevant and that the plant, instruments, access equipment and tools are fit for purpose
- identify the customer/client's requirements
- plan the commissioning process
- determine and obtain the resources required to undertake the process
- ensure methods and organisational procedures are implemented correctly
- verify that the customer/client's requirements are met
- inspect and resolve any problems identified
- specify methods and organisational procedures which conform with customer/client requirements
- inspect and confirm that conditions are suitable for commissioning to take place
- complete the commissioning process in accordance with manufacturer instructions
- record and assess information in accordance with organisational procedures
- ensure that the results are recorded in the appropriate information systems and passed to relevant others
- ensure that the devices are ready for hand over to the customer/client
- identify and explain any variations
- obtain customer/client acceptance of the devices in accordance with organisational procedures
- implement organisational procedures for the safe transport and/or disposal of waste material, substances and liquids in accordance with suppliers' and manufacturers' instructions
comply with organisational procedures for:
- completion of the relevant documentation
- the recording of relevant data and information
- informing relevant others
- addressing issues and problems identified
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
