Overview
This standard is about selling footwear, leathergoods and care and ancillary products to customers.
This includes establishing customer requirements, presenting the range of options, helping customers to make their choice, offering complementary care and ancillary products, making sure customers are happy with product selection, packaging products and completing sales.
This standard is for anyone who works in a retail environment which focusses on the sale of footwear, leathergoods, care or ancillary products.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- obtain information from customers' about their requirements at appropriate times
- present options that meet customer requirements from available products
- offer guidance to help customers select product options when requested
- offer care and ancillary products that complement footwear and leathergoods options when appropriate
- check that customers are happy with all chosen products before processing sales
- pack bought products in a way that protects them and meets customers' requirements
- operate payment equipment in line with manufacturers' instructions
- prepare, check and issue receipts in line with the organisation's procedures
- comply with written instructions relating to selling footwear and leathergoods
- complete required forms, records and other documentation
- work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

- how to establish customers' requirements, budget and preferences
- the product range and prices including care and ancillary products
- the compatibility of care and ancillary products with the materials used in construction of available footwear and leathergoods
- current and future availability
- the purposes to which customers may put products
- stock control and tracking methods
- packaging techniques to protect products
- the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- how to take payments by all the methods accepted by the organisation
- actions to take if transactions are refused
- behaviour which will encourage customer to visit again
- the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
- statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
